When Is the Best Time to Visit Dubrovnik? A Local Guide to Every Season
One of the questions I hear most often as a local guide is simple:
“When is the best time to visit Dubrovnik?”
The honest answer is: it depends on what kind of Dubrovnik you want to experience.
If you want pleasant weather, fewer crowds and ideal conditions for walking through the Old Town, I usually recommend April, May, September and early October. These months give you a wonderful balance: warm days (most of the time), a lively city, open restaurants and attractions, and enough space to enjoy Dubrovnik without feeling rushed.
But that does not mean June, July and August should be avoided. I love those 3 months of the year as I prefer beach days.
In fact, if you dream of swimming in the Adriatic, long sunny days, boat trips, summer evenings, open-air events and the full Mediterranean atmosphere, June, July and August can be excellent months to visit Dubrovnik. They are warmer and livelier, of course, but with good planning, they can also be a fantastic time to experience the city.
After many years of guiding visitors through Dubrovnik, I have learned one thing: there is no single “perfect” month for everyone. The best time to come depends on whether you are looking for sunshine, swimming, history, photography, Game of Thrones, Star Wars or Outer Banks locations, family time, romantic evenings or a quieter local atmosphere.
This guide will help you choose the best time for your trip.
Quick Answer: The Best Time to Visit Dubrovnik
For most first-time visitors, the best time to visit Dubrovnik is April, May, September or October.
These months are especially good if you want to:
- explore the Old Town comfortably
- walk the City Walls without strong summer heat
- take a guided walking tour
- enjoy beautiful light for photos
- avoid the busiest parts of the season
- combine sightseeing with a relaxed holiday atmosphere
If your priority is swimming, beaches, boat tours and summer energy, then June, July and August are also a very good choice. The city is at its most vibrant, the sea is warm, evenings are full of life, and everything is open.
If you prefer peace, lower prices and a more local feeling, then November to March can also be interesting, especially if you do not expect a beach holiday.
If you already know when you are coming to Dubrovnik and want to experience the Old Town with a local guide, you can explore my walking tours and choose the one that best fits your visit.

Dubrovnik in Spring: March, April and May
Spring is one of my favourite times of year in Dubrovnik.
The city slowly wakes up after winter. Cafés become livelier, the days get longer, flowers appear around stone houses and gardens, and the Old Town feels fresh without being too crowded.
March
March is still quiet. You should not expect summer weather, but you can expect a more local Dubrovnik. This is a good month if you want peaceful streets, lower accommodation prices and a slower rhythm.
Some restaurants and services may still have limited hours, but the main beauty of Dubrovnik is always there: the stone streets, the city walls, the sea views, the history and the feeling of walking through a living museum.
March is best for visitors who want culture, photography and calm — not swimming or nightlife.
April
April is when Dubrovnik starts to feel like a real travel destination again. The weather is usually much more pleasant, more restaurants open, and the city becomes more active.
This is a very good month for walking tours. You can explore the Old Town, hear the stories behind the city walls, visit filming locations, and still have enough space to enjoy the streets without the intensity of peak season.
If Easter falls in April, the city can be a little busier, but in a good way. It feels alive, not overwhelming.
May
May is one of the best months to visit Dubrovnik.
The weather is usually warm enough for comfortable sightseeing, the city is lively, and the season is already well underway. At the same time, it is not yet the full summer rush.
For many visitors, May offers the best version of Dubrovnik: enough sun, enough atmosphere, but still a relaxed feeling.
If you want to walk the City Walls, take a Game of Thrones tour, explore hidden corners of the Old Town or take photos without the strongest summer heat, May is a wonderful choice.
As a guide, I often find that guests who visit in May are surprised by how pleasant Dubrovnik feels. They expected a famous destination, but they also discover a city that still gives them room to breathe.

Dubrovnik in Early Summer: June
June is another excellent month to visit Dubrovnik.
By June, the sea is becoming more inviting, the days are long, and the city has the energy of summer without always feeling as intense as July or August.
This is a great month if you want to combine sightseeing with swimming, beach time or a boat trip. You can explore the Old Town in the morning, relax by the sea in the afternoon, and enjoy dinner outside in the evening.
June is also a very good time for families, couples and first-time visitors. Almost everything is open, tours are running, the weather is usually reliable, and the city has a beautiful summer feeling.
My advice for June is simple: do your main sightseeing earlier in the day or later in the afternoon. Not because June is impossible during the day, but because Dubrovnik is always more enjoyable when you follow its natural rhythm.
Morning light on the stone streets is beautiful. Evening walks are even better.
Dubrovnik in July and August: Busy, Warm — and Still Worth Visiting
Many travel articles tell people to avoid Dubrovnik in July and August.
I would not say that. Especially in the last couple of years I have a feeling that is less crowded than shoulder season. You will just need to beat the heat.
Yes, July and August are the hottest and liveliest months of the year. Yes, you should expect more visitors during early morning hours or late afternoon. And yes, you need to plan your day more carefully than in May or October.
But for many travellers, summer is exactly what they want.
If your idea of Dubrovnik includes warm sea, swimming, boat trips, long evenings, open-air restaurants, beach bars, island excursions and a real Mediterranean summer atmosphere, then July and August can be fantastic.
The important thing is not to avoid Dubrovnik in summer. The important thing is to experience it in the right way.
Why July and August Can Be a Great Time to Visit
July and August are ideal if you want:
- warm sea and beach time
- boat trips to nearby islands
- kayaking or sea activities
- long daylight hours
- lively restaurants and cafés
- summer events and open-air atmosphere
- evening walks through the Old Town
- the full energy of Dubrovnik at its peak
This is the Dubrovnik many people imagine before they arrive: bright stone, blue sea, warm evenings and a city full of life.
Also, the situation in the Old Town can vary a lot from day to day and even from hour to hour. Some visitors expect it to be impossible to walk around in summer, but then discover that with a good schedule, it is much more enjoyable than they expected. You always need to check cruise ships arrival time to know when it is going to be more crowded in the old city.

How to Enjoy Dubrovnik in July and August
If you visit Dubrovnik in July or August, timing matters.
I would recommend exploring the Old Town very early in the morning ( 7 a.m.) or later in the evening (9 p.m.). Midday is better for lunch, a rest, a beach, a boat trip or a shaded break.
For walking tours, mornings and late afternoons are usually the most pleasant. The light is better, the temperature is more comfortable, and the city feels more atmospheric.
Evenings in July and August can be magical. When the sun goes down, the stone streets cool slightly, restaurants fill up, and the city gets that special summer energy that is hard to describe until you feel it.
So no, I would not tell you to avoid Dubrovnik in July or August.
I would simply tell you: come prepared, plan smartly, and let a local show you how to enjoy the city without wasting your time in the wrong places at the wrong hours.
Visiting in July or August? A well-timed guided tour can make a big difference. Early morning and late afternoon are usually the best moments to explore the Old Town, especially if you want to enjoy the city without wasting energy in the hottest part of the day.

Dubrovnik in September and October
September is often the month I recommend to friends who ask me when they should come to Dubrovnik for the first time.
The sea is still warm, the weather is usually pleasant, and the city remains lively. At the same time, the strongest summer heat begins to fade, and the atmosphere becomes more relaxed.
September
September is probably the best month for travellers who want a little bit of everything.
You can still swim. You can still enjoy boat trips. Restaurants and tours are running. The evenings are warm. But sightseeing becomes easier than in the peak of summer.
For couples, September is especially good. It has a romantic feeling: warm light, calmer streets, beautiful sunsets and a slower pace.
For photography, September can also be excellent. The light is softer than in high summer, and you can still capture Dubrovnik with a bright Adriatic feeling.
October
October is one of the most underrated months in Dubrovnik.
Early October can still be very pleasant, especially for walking, history, food, photography and cultural experiences. The sea may still be warm enough for some people, although it is no longer a classic beach holiday month.
As October continues, the city becomes quieter. Some seasonal businesses may start reducing hours, but for visitors who want to understand Dubrovnik rather than just pass through it, this can be a very rewarding time.
October is especially good for a private walking tour, a City Tour, a Game of Thrones Tour or a slower exploration of local stories, history and legends.
If you want Dubrovnik with fewer distractions, October is a strong choice.

Dubrovnik in Winter: November to February
Winter in Dubrovnik is completely different from summer.
If you come expecting beaches, swimming and a full tourist season, winter is not the right choice. But if you want quiet streets, local life, history and a slower atmosphere, winter can be surprisingly beautiful.
From November to February, you see a more intimate Dubrovnik. The city belongs more to locals again. The Old Town is quieter, the light can be dramatic, and the stone streets have a different mood.
Winter is not ideal if this is your once-in-a-lifetime summer holiday. But it can be ideal if you have already visited Dubrovnik before, or if you enjoy cities when they are calm and atmospheric.
December can be charming because of the festive season. January and February are the quietest months, and some restaurants or services may be closed, but the main historical beauty of Dubrovnik remains.
For travellers interested in history, local stories and photography, winter can be very special.
And if you take a private tour in winter, you may experience something almost impossible in summer: Dubrovnik without hurry.

Best Time to Visit Dubrovnik for Sightseeing
For sightseeing, I would choose April, May, June, September or October.
These months are best for walking the Old Town, visiting the City Walls, learning about Dubrovnik’s history and seeing the city without the strongest summer heat.
If you want to see as much as possible in one day, spring and autumn usually make it easier. You can walk more, stop more often, ask questions, take photos and enjoy the city at a comfortable pace.
That said, sightseeing in July and August is also possible — you just need to choose the right time of day.
In summer, early morning and late afternoon are your best friends.
Best Time to Visit Dubrovnik for Swimming and Beaches
If swimming is important to you, the best time to visit Dubrovnik is usually June to September.
July and August are the strongest months for a beach holiday. The sea is warm, the weather is hot, and boat trips are at their best.
June is good if you want summer without the full peak-season feeling. September is wonderful if you want warm sea with a more relaxed atmosphere.
May can be beautiful, but the sea may still feel cool for some visitors. October can also be pleasant, especially early in the month, but swimming is less guaranteed.
For beach lovers, I would not avoid July or August. I would simply plan sightseeing around the heat and leave the warmest part of the day for the sea.

Best Time to Visit Dubrovnik for Game of Thrones Fans
Game of Thrones fans can enjoy Dubrovnik almost all year, but the best months are usually April, May, June, September and October.
Why?
Because most filming locations are inside or around the Old Town, and these are best explored on foot. Comfortable weather makes the experience much better.
You do not want to rush through King’s Landing because it is too hot, too crowded or because you are tired after ten minutes.
In spring and autumn, it is easier to stop, compare scenes, take photos and hear the stories behind the filming locations.
But summer also has its charm. If you visit in July or August, I recommend taking a Game of Thrones Tour earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon. That way you avoid the strongest heat and get a much better feeling for the locations.
Dubrovnik is not just a filming location. It is a real city with a much longer history than any TV show. The best tours connect both: the fantasy of King’s Landing and the real story of Dubrovnik.
Best Time to Visit Dubrovnik for Photography
For photography, I love May, September and October.
The light is softer, the city is not as harshly bright as in the middle of summer, and you usually have more space to compose a photo.
Early mornings are beautiful almost all year. Stradun before the city fully wakes up, the Old Town from above, the small side streets, the harbour, Fort Lovrijenac, the city walls — all of these places change depending on the light.
July and August can also be excellent for photography, especially at sunrise and sunset. The colours are strong, the sea is bright, and the city has a powerful summer atmosphere.
The mistake many visitors make is trying to take their best photos in the middle of the day. In Dubrovnik, the best light usually comes early or late.

So, When Should You Visit Dubrovnik?
If this is your first visit and you want the best overall balance, come in May, June, September or early October.
If you want the warmest sea, beach time, boat tours and summer atmosphere, come in July or August.
If you want quiet streets and a more local feeling, come in winter or early spring.
But no matter when you come, Dubrovnik will show you a different face.
That is what I love about this city. It is not the same in May as it is in August. It is not the same in October as it is in January. The stones, the light, the rhythm of the streets, the sound of the sea, the people — everything changes.
After many years of guiding visitors through Dubrovnik, I can tell you this: the best time to visit is not only about weather.
It is about the experience you want to have.
And if you would like to understand Dubrovnik beyond the usual guidebook descriptions, I would be happy to show you the city through the eyes of a local.
Whether you are interested in history, Game of Thrones, movie locations, legends, hidden corners or simply the best way to experience the Old Town, joining a guided tour can help you see much more than you would notice on your own.
Dubrovnik is beautiful in every season.
You just need to know how to experience it.
If you would like to discover Dubrovnik beyond the usual guidebook descriptions, I would be happy to show you the city through the eyes of a local.
