Full Guide to the Locations
& Behind-the-Scenes Insights

When the global hype around Game of Thrones turned Dubrovnik into one of the most recognizable filming destinations in the world, no one expected that the next major production to arrive would be Netflix’s Outer Banks. Yet here we are: Outer Banks Season 5 — the final season — is being filmed in Dubrovnik, Cavtat, and on Lokrum Island, bringing the story of the Pogues to a close with a brand-new Adriatic backdrop.

As a licensed Dubrovnik tour guide, I had the opportunity to meet part of the crew during production and follow the filming around the city. In this guide, you’ll find everything you need to know about the locations used for the show — and how you can visit them.

Why Outer Banks Chose Dubrovnik

Croatia has become a major filming destination for international productions. The country offers:

  • competitive filming incentives
  • experienced local crews
  • excellent logistics
  • diverse landscapes and historical architecture
  • proven track record with major studios

Dubrovnik has already hosted some of the world’s biggest franchises, including:

  • Game of Thrones (King’s Landing)
  • Star Wars: The Last Jedi
  • Robin Hood (2018)
  • Knightfall
  • Bollywood production “Fan”

With a medieval Old Town, fortresses, beaches, islands, mountain viewpoints, and harbors all within minutes of each other, Dubrovnik was a natural fit for the adventurous, treasure-hunt tone of Outer Banks.

Old Town Dubrovnik

Outer Banks Season 5 Filming Locations in Dubrovnik & Surroundings

Below is a verified list of public filming locations used by the production while shooting in Croatia.
All locations are accessible to visitors and can be explored on foot or via a guided tour.

1. Old Town Dubrovnik

The UNESCO-protected Old Town served as the main base for several days of filming. Its narrow stone streets used for motorcycle chase and preserved medieval look make it suitable for different settings without major modifications.

2. Stradun

Dubrovnik’s main promenade was closed during parts of the filming schedule. With its polished limestone pavement and historic façades, Stradun offers a cinematic backdrop immediately recognizable to viewers.

3. Old Port (Porat)

The picturesque old harbor, framed by Saint John Fortress, was used for multiple scenes involving boats and waterfront action — a natural choice for a series deeply connected to boats and coastal life.

4. Dubrovnik City Walls

Some of the world’s most famous medieval fortifications, the walls offer dramatic cliffs, sea views, and hidden passages. The production filmed along select accessible sections. Stunt double jumped from the top of the wall in the Adriatic sea after motorcycle race along the city wall. Check my TikTok video.

5. Luža Square

One of the most iconic squares in Dubrovnik, located next to Sponza Palace and the Church of St. Blaise. A popular filming location thanks to its open layout and historical buildings.

6. Sponza Palace

A striking 16th-century palace used in many international productions. The courtyard and façade are ideal for scenes requiring historical ambience.

7. Jesuit Staircase

One of the most famous staircases in Croatia, leading to the Church of St. Ignatius. Known worldwide from Game of Thrones, the stairs have once again become a star filming location.

8. Franciscan Monastery

Located near Pile Gate, the monastery and its cloister provide a visually rich setting with impressive stone architecture.

9. Danče Beach

A rugged, rocky beach west of the Old Town. Danče is known for dramatic waves and cliffs — a perfect match for action-focused scenes.

10. Sesame Restaurant Area

The small park and pathways near Restaurant Sesame were used for part of the outdoor sequences.

11. Lapad Marina in Gruž Harbour

A modern marina area frequently used for logistics and filming involving boats. The contrast between historic Old Town and the Gruž harbor gives the production diversity in visual style.

12. Srđ Mountain

The panoramic viewpoint above Dubrovnik, reachable by cable car, offers one of the best views in Croatia. A natural choice for wide establishing shots.

13. Lokrum Island

Just 10 minutes from Old Town by boat, this lush nature reserve was used for several outdoor scenes. Lokrum’s botanical gardens, rocky coastline, and monastery ruins are favorites among film crews.

14. Cavtat

The charming coastal town south of Dubrovnik served as an additional filming location. Known for its waterfront promenade and old center, Cavtat provides a quieter but equally photogenic setting.

Behind the Scenes: Meeting the Crew & Observing the Filming

During production in Croatia, the Outer Banks team filmed across multiple days and at various times of day, often early morning or late evening to capture ideal lighting and avoid crowds.
I had the chance to meet part of the crew on several occasions while they were preparing or wrapping scenes around Dubrovnik, Cavtat, and Lokrum.

While specific plot details remain confidential until the season airs, the filming style included:

  • extensive use of handheld and steady-cam equipment

  • drone shots above Old Town and Gruž

  • boat sequences around the city walls

  • coordination with local authorities for temporary street closures

Once the final season releases in 2026, these locations will become instantly recognizable to fans.

How to Visit the Outer Banks Filming Locations

Most locations are easily walkable from the Old Town, but for the best experience, consider joining a guided tour.

Croatia as a Global Filming Destination

Croatia continues to attract major international productions thanks to:

  • established filming incentive program

  • exceptional natural scenery

  • historical towns perfect for period pieces

  • experienced local production companies

  • accessible coastline and islands

Dubrovnik, Split, Šibenik, Zagreb, and various national parks are regularly featured in films, high-budget series, commercials, and music videos.
With the arrival of Outer Banks, Croatia strengthens its position as a prime European location for set-jetting tourism.

Conclusion

Outer Banks Season 5 marks the final chapter of the beloved series — and Dubrovnik plays a major role in giving it a memorable send-off. With filming now completed across Dubrovnik, Cavtat, Lokrum, and other locations, fans can expect some of the Adriatic’s most iconic scenery to appear on screen when the season releases in 2026.

Until then, visitors can explore every filming location in person — and walk through centuries of history and modern Hollywood magic.
