The 5 Best Day Trips from Dubrovnik: Local Guide’s Picks
Dubrovnik is one of Europe’s most beautiful cities, but some of the most memorable experiences begin once you leave the city walls.
If you’re planning to stay in Dubrovnik for more than three days, I always recommend setting aside at least one day for exploring the surrounding region. Within just one or two hours, you can visit secluded islands, historic towns, famous vineyards, spectacular national parks and even cross into two neighbouring countries.
As a licensed local Dubrovnik tour guide, I’ve guided visitors from all over the world through these destinations for years. Some are perfect for wine lovers, others for families, while a few are ideal if you’re looking for untouched nature or authentic local culture.
Below are the five day trips I recommend most often as a local Dubrovnik guide. Each offers a completely different experience, so the best choice depends on what you enjoy most—whether that’s islands, wine, history, nature or authentic local culture.
Quick Comparison
| If you enjoy... | Best day trip |
|---|---|
| 🏝️ Islands & sandy beaches | Elaphiti Islands & Mljet |
| 🍷 Wine & gastronomy | Pelješac & Korčula |
| 🌿 Authentic local Croatia | Konavle Valley |
| 🏔️ Dramatic coastal scenery | Bay of Kotor (Montenegro) |
| 🏛️ Different culture & history | Mostar & Kravice Waterfalls |
Local Tip
If you're spending four days or longer in Dubrovnik, I recommend combining one island day, one cultural excursion and one food & wine experience. This gives you a much broader picture of southern Croatia than staying inside the Old Town every day.
1. Elaphiti Islands & Mljet
Why visit?
- Visit three beautiful Adriatic islands in one day.
- Experience sandy beaches that are rare along the Croatian coast.
- Enjoy swimming in crystal-clear water.
- Taste local wines and fresh seafood.
- Explore one of Croatia's greenest islands.
Best for
- Families
- Couples
- Nature lovers
- Beach lovers
- Photography enthusiasts
Where to Eat on Mljet
Although many visitors head straight back to Dubrovnik after exploring Mljet National Park, it's well worth staying for lunch. The island is known for fresh seafood, grilled fish, octopus, local olive oil and relaxed family-run konobas overlooking the sea. If you're visiting Pomena or Polače, you'll find several good waterfront restaurants just a short walk from the National Park entrance. For a quieter, more authentic experience, consider heading to one of the traditional konobas in smaller villages such as Okuklje or Saplunara, where local ingredients and homemade specialities are the highlight. If you’re wondering where to have lunch after visiting the National Park, I’ve also put together a separate guide to the best restaurants and traditional konobas on Mljet.
2. Pelješac & Korčula – Croatia's Most Beautiful Wine Country
Highlights
- Visit Croatia's premier wine region.
- Taste Plavac Mali wines where they are produced.
- Fresh oysters from Mali Ston Bay.
- Scenic drive through Dingač vineyards.
- Swimming stops during summer.
- Boat ride to Korčula Island.
- Explore Korčula Old Town.
Best for
- Wine lovers
- Foodies
- Couples
- Photography enthusiasts
- Travellers looking beyond Dubrovnik

3. Konavle Valley – Authentic Croatia Just South of Dubrovnik
Highlights
- Visit charming Cavtat.
- Explore Sokol Grad fortress.
- Enjoy authentic Croatian cuisine.
- Discover vineyards and rural villages.
- Visit spectacular Pasjača Beach.
Best for
- Food lovers
- Families
- Culture lovers
- Travellers seeking authentic Croatia
- Visitors avoiding large crowds
My local recommendation If you've already explored Dubrovnik's Old Town, Konavle offers the perfect contrast. It's peaceful, authentic and gives you a glimpse into everyday life in southern Croatia that most visitors never experience. If you'd like to discover Konavle with a local licensed guide, I can organise a private day tour based on your interests and preferred pace. ➡️ CONTACT ME

4. Bay of Kotor (Montenegro) – One of Europe's Most Beautiful Bays
⚠️ Before You Go
The Bay of Kotor is one of my favourite day trips from Dubrovnik—but timing matters. Between June and September, border crossings into Montenegro can become heavily congested, especially on weekends and public holidays. Depending on traffic, you may spend several hours waiting to cross the border. If you're visiting Dubrovnik in spring, autumn or early summer, this excursion is much more enjoyable and is one of my top recommendations. Although Montenegro uses the euro (€), it is not part of the European Union or the Schengen Area, so border controls remain in place. Be sure to carry a valid passport or other accepted travel document.Highlights
- Visit two beautiful historic towns.
- Drive around the entire Bay of Kotor.
- Numerous panoramic photo stops.
- UNESCO World Heritage Site.
- Beautiful mountain scenery.
Best for
- History lovers
- Photographers
- Couples
- First-time visitors to Montenegro

5. Mostar & Kravice Waterfalls – Where East Meets West
Highlights
- Visit historic Mostar.
- UNESCO-listed Old Bridge.
- Traditional Ottoman architecture.
- Explore local markets.
- Relax at Kravice Waterfalls.
- Experience two countries in one holiday.
Best for
- History lovers
- Culture enthusiasts
- Nature lovers
- Photographers
- Travellers looking for something different
My recommendation There are many tours to Mostar, but I strongly recommend choosing a small-group experience with knowledgeable local guides rather than the largest coaches. The day is simply more enjoyable when you spend less time waiting and more time exploring. If you're looking for a well-organised small-group excursion, I recommend Laus Travel, whose experienced drivers and guides have been introducing visitors to Bosnia and Herzegovina for many years.

If I Had Only One Free Day
If a friend asked me to recommend just one day trip from Dubrovnik, I'd choose the Elaphiti Islands & Mljet. It perfectly combines everything visitors hope to experience on the Adriatic: crystal-clear sea, beautiful islands, sandy beaches, local food, relaxed villages and unforgettable scenery — all without spending hours in the car. If you have time for a second excursion, I'd suggest Pelješac & Korčula. Together, these two trips offer the perfect balance of islands, nature, wine, history and authentic Dalmatian culture.Final Thoughts
One of the biggest mistakes visitors make is spending every day inside Dubrovnik's Old Town. While Dubrovnik certainly deserves its reputation, some of the region's most memorable experiences lie just beyond the city walls. Whether you're exploring quiet Adriatic islands, tasting wines on the Pelješac Peninsula, discovering the rural charm of Konavle or crossing into Montenegro or Bosnia and Herzegovina, each destination reveals a different side of this remarkable corner of Europe. As a local licensed Dubrovnik guide, I always encourage visitors to experience more than just the city itself. Southern Dalmatia is incredibly diverse, and even one extra day can completely change how you remember your trip. Don’t try to see everything. I’d rather experience one destination properly than rush through three. Southern Dalmatia rewards travellers who slow down, take their time and enjoy each place instead of simply ticking attractions off a list.Need Help Choosing the Right Day Trip?
